ATHENS (AA) - Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases due to the new omicron variant, Greece will start implementing new measures from Friday to stem rising infections.

Addressing a news conference, Greek Health Minister Thanos Plevris said an increase in COVID-19 cases has been observed in the last two days.

After recommendations by the country’s scientific committee, the government has canceled all seasonal public festivals and made face masks mandatory in all public areas, both indoor and outdoor, from Friday until Jan. 3.

Noting that the new variant is highly transmissible, he said a clearer picture will be available in the coming 10 to 15 days.

All travelers coming to Greece will be required to repeat tests for COVID-19 on the second and fourth day after their entry.

After the holidays, additional measures will be taken once a committee of health experts examines the latest figures on Monday, he said, stressing that a lockdown is currently not in the government’s plans.

Educational activities will not be affected under the new measures, the minister added.
