5 soldiers killed in airstrike targeting Damascus airport

GAZA CITY, Palestine (AA) – Palestinian resistance group Hamas on Saturday condemned an Israeli airstrike that targeted the Damascus International Airport in southwestern Syria.

The state news agency SANA said five Syrian soldiers were killed in the attack that targeted the airport early Saturday.

“This bombing was the latest of the Israeli aggression in the region,” Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said in a statement.

He added that Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, “stands by Syria in the face of this repeated aggression.”

Israeli officials generally refrain from commenting on attacks on Syrian territory.

Israel has been sporadically carrying out attacks against Iranian-backed groups and regime military positions in Syria since the eruption of the country’s civil war in 2011.
