Hamas wins major university election in West Bank

RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) - The Hamas-affiliated student body Islamic Wafaa’ Bloc on Wednesday won the student council elections held at the Birzeit University in West Bank for the fourth year in row, the university announced in a statement.

According to the university administration, the Islamic Wafaa’ Bloc won 24 out of 51 seats, while the Fatah-affiliated Yasser Arafat Bloc bagged 23 seats and the Democratic Progressive Student Pole won four seats.

Hamas-backed Islamic Wafaa’ Bloc, Fatah-affiliated Yasser Arafat Bloc, Democratic Progressive Student Pole, and the Students Unity had competed in the elections, the statement said.

A total of 74.6 percent of 12,068 eligible students voted in the elections.
