Health of scholar’s daughter deteriorates in Egypt jail

CAIRO (AA) – The health conditions of prominent Muslim scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s daughter are deteriorating, her family said Monday.

Ola al-Qaradawi, 55, and her husband were detained by Egyptian authorities in June for alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood and planning attacks.

On Sunday, judicial authorities remanded her into custody for 15 days pending investigation into the accusations.

In a statement, her family said Ola had lost consciousness during Sunday’s hearing to renew her remand, holding Egyptian authorities responsible for her health.

“What’s happening with her a slow killing behind bars,” the statement said.

In August, Egyptian authorities froze the assets of Qaradawi’s six sons, as well as Ola.

In June, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain issued a joint statement accusing 59 individuals and 12 charities in Qatar of being “linked to terrorism”.

The list included the elder al-Qaradawi, the president of the International Union for Muslim Scholars.

The four states accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism and severed all diplomatic and trade ties with the Gulf country.

Doha denies the accusations, describing attempts to diplomatically isolate it as a violation of international law and its national sovereignty.
