LONDON (AA) – A heroic imam who saved the life of Darren Osborne, a far-right terrorist who killed one Muslim worshipper and injured 11 others when he plowed into a group of people last year, was praised in the British parliament Wednesday.

Mohammed Mahmoud, the imam of the Muslim Welfare House, which Osborne targeted, attended the Prime Minister’s Question Time – a weekly parliamentary session where lawmakers direct questions to the leader of the government.

“Yesterday marked one year since the attack on the Finsbury Park Mosque,” Prime Minister May said at the session in the House of Commons.

“It was a truly cowardly attack that was intended to divide us but we will not let this happen,” May said, adding: “We have been joined today by the imam of the mosque, Mohammed Mahmoud, and I am sure members from across the House will join me in paying tribute to his extraordinary bravery and dignity.”

Osbourne, 48, drove his car into a crowd of worshippers coming out of the Muslim Welfare House at the Finsbury Park Mosque in June 2017. His act of terror claimed the life of Makram Ali, 51, who was remembered yesterday on the first anniversary of the terrorist attack.

This February the far-right terrorist was found guilty of murder and attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 43 years.

Mahmoud protected Osbourne from outraged crowds after the attack, preventing violence from spiraling out of control.

“I join the prime minister in welcoming my friend Imam Mohammed Mahmoud for coming here today and for the enormous humanity and presence of mind he showed on that terrible day a year ago when he prevented violence from breaking out on the streets of my constituency,” said Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition in parliament.

“I thank him and all the religious leaders in the local community who did so much to bind people together, as a country we should be bound together in condemning racism in any form wherever it arises,” Corbyn added.

In a ceremony held on Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of the terror attack, Mahmoud gave messages of peace.

Reading a verse from the holy Quran counseling patience to believers as a key to success, Mahmoud said, “The conduct of Makram Ali’s family during the last year and the victims who suffered horrific injuries at the hand of this cowardly attacker” reminded him of the verse, and those who suffered from the attack “have fulfilled these conditions of success.”

Also speaking at the ceremony held in Islington Town Hall, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said Mohammed Mahmoud’s action made for “a kind of story that gives us hope and shows our values will always be stronger than the hatred of the extremists.”
