Houthi rebels attack Mokha port in Yemen

Port targeted with missiles, explosive-laden drones

By Aziz al-Ahmadi

SANAA, Yemen (AA) – Houthi rebels attacked the port of Mokha in Taiz province in southwestern Yemen, according to government forces on Saturday.

The port was targeted by three missiles and four explosive-laden drones, the Joint Force, which controls Yemen’s west coast, said in a statement.

The attack occurred shortly after a visit by a delegation from the Yemeni Transport Ministry to launch operations at the port, the statement said.

No information was yet available about damage from the attack.

There was no comment from the Houthi group.

Yemen has been beset by violence and chaos since 2014, when Iran-aligned Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital, Sanaa. The crisis escalated in 2015 when a Saudi-led coalition launched a devastating air campaign aimed at rolling back Houthi territorial gains.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the conflict has claimed more than 233,000 lives.
