KATHMANDU, Nepal (AA) - Hundreds of people have been displaced after monsoon rains triggered floods and landslides in Nepal, an official said on Wednesday.

Dil Kumar Tamang, head of the National Emergency Operation Centre, said at least two people were killed and nearly two dozen others missing in the country.

"More than 300 people have fled their villages in the worst-hit Manang district (in the country's north)," Tamang said, adding some 27 workers were rescued from a hydropower project in Sindhupalchok district, northeast of capital Kathmandu.

Floods hit the town of Melamchi in Sindhupalchok district Tuesday night, he said, adding that the fatalities were yet to be determined.

On Saturday, the country’s Meteorological Office had warned of heavy rainfall this week, with warnings that dozens of rivers and rivulets would inundate cities and towns across the country.

"We have also sent tents, dry foods to the affected areas," he said, adding that floods damaged two hydropower projects in Lamjung district.

In Nepal, hundreds of people die each year due to floods and landslides during monsoon season, which runs from June to September.
