Hungary sentences 2 PKK suspects to prison

Couple sentenced to 2 years in prison, prohibited entry to country

By Mehmet Yilmaz

BUDAPEST (AA) - A Hungarian court has sentenced a married couple to two years in prison over links to the YPG/PKK terrorist group, local sources said Friday.

The Municipal Court of Szeged also slammed an eight-year entry ban to Hungary on the couple, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

The couple was accused of financing terrorism.

The husband joined the PKK terror group in 2009 and has been working for the YPG, its Syrian offshoot, with his Iranian wife since 2014.

The couple had requested asylum from the Hungarian government after reaching its borders aided by human smugglers.

In its 30-year terrorist campaign, the PKK -- recognized as a terror group by the U.S., EU, and Turkey -- has killed some 40,000 people, including numerous civilians.

Turkey, for its part, has vowed to launch an anti-terror campaign -- specifically targeting the YPG /PKK -- east of the Euphrates River.
