Hungary to take back some migrants from Austria

Prime minister says will accept migrants who first registered in Hungary

By Mehmet Yilmaz

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AA) - Hungary will take back some migrants from Austria, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Tuesday.

However, he said he would only accept those who first entered the EU by registering in Hungary. Migrants who first arrived in other EU states, such as Greece, would be rejected.

Speaking at a news conference with his Austrian counterpart Christian Kern in Budapest, Orban said his country’s southern border with Serbia was the crucial point at which to halt migration to the EU.

Orban, whose government is holding a referendum on Oct. 2 on its opposition to future redistribution of migrants in the EU, described migration as a “poison” for Hungary.

Kern said Austria would be sending 20 police officers to help guard the Hungary-Serbia border, where a razor-wire fence has been built to stop the flow of migrants.

He recognized that Austria and Germany had both “profited from these measures”.
