India: Court allows probe of missing student to close

But mother of Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing 2 years ago after alleged political brawl, vows Supreme Court appeal

By Shuriah Niazi

NEW DELHI, India (AA) - India’s federal investigative agency was allowed Monday to close the case of a university student who went missing nearly two years ago, but his mother vowed to appeal the decision.

The Delhi High Court on Monday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a closure report into Najeeb Ahmed, a Jawaharlal Nehru University student who disappeared on Oct. 15, 2016, after a scuffle with some students allegedly affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel rejected the plea of Fatima Nafees for a Special Investigative Team (SIT) probe of her son’s case.

According to the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency, Nafees’ lawyer argued before the court that it was a "political case" and that the "CBI has succumbed to the pressure of its masters."

After Delhi police efforts on the case proved fruitless, the probe of Ahmed's whereabouts was handed over to the CBI in May 2017, said PTI.

Fatima Nafees told Anadolu Agency: “We will be going to the Supreme Court.”

“Nothing has been done in the last two years. I know everything has been going on under the direction of those in power,” she added.
