NEW DELHI, India (AA) - India has recorded over 50,000 coronavirus cases for a seventh consecutive day, with 50,868 new infections in the last 24 hours until Wednesday morning.

The country has registered over 400,000 COVID-19 cases in just eight days.

The country’s total tally is now at 1,906,631 and the death toll has climbed to 39,820, according to Health Ministry data. The total number of cases in the country includes 586,298 active cases and 1,230,509 cured/discharged/migrated.

The five most affected states by the total tally of cases are western Maharashtra (457,956), the southern states of Tamil Nadu (268,285), Andhra Pradesh (176,333) and Karnataka (145,830), and the national capital Delhi (139,156).

“Effective containment, aggressive testing and standardized clinical management protocols based on a holistic standard of care approach continue to result in a progressively reducing Case Fatality Rate (CFR). India has registered the lowest CFR since the first lockdown at 2.10% as compared to the global average,” the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said about 96% of the 60,000 ventilators being procured by the government are indigenous and most of them have been sponsored by the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund).

A record 661,892 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. This took the cumulative testing to 20,864,750 samples and the Tests per Million (TPM) to 15,119, the ministry confirmed.
