India sees steady decline in COVID-19 cases

Country registers 46,790 new cases, 587 deaths in last 24 hours

CHANDIGARH, India (AA) - For the first time in the last few months, India registered less than 50,000 daily coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours.

According to an official update of the Health Ministry on Tuesday, 46,790 new cases were recorded taking the total count to 7.59 million.

The ministry also announced that 587 additional fatalities from COVID-19 were registered over the last 24 hours in the country, taking the toll to 115,197.

Today’s dip in the cases has come as a government-appointed panel on Sunday said India has likely crossed the virus peak last month. The panel claimed the outbreak could be controlled by February 2021, provided all protocols are followed and the government does not relax activities further.

A government release on Tuesday morning said: “India’s steady trend of registering dipping active cases continues.”

The new cases over the past day have fallen below 50,000 for the first time in nearly three months, while the number of daily infections was 47,703 on July 28, the government noted, adding that the "percentage of active cases has fallen below 10%".

“The total positive cases of the country today are less than 7.5 lakh [748,538] and comprise merely 9.85% of the total,” the government also said.
