ANKARA (AA) – India on Tuesday said it has conducted a successful maiden test-firing of a medium range surface-to-air missile by an indigenously built guided missile destroyer.

"The successful maiden MRSAM missile firing by Indian Navy Ship Mormugao is yet another milestone in Indian Navy's quest for accurate delivery of Ordnance on Target," India's Western Naval Command wrote on Twitter.

It also said the Western Naval Command remains "stood to counter all challenges in the maritime domain" with unrelenting commitment to achieve the goal of a fully self-reliant navy by 2047.

An Indian Navy spokesman wrote on Twitter that Mormugao "successfully carried out engagement of sea-skimming supersonic target."

It shows the Indian Navy's "futureproof combat readiness and commitment towards AatmaNirbharBharat," the spokesman said on Twitter, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a self-reliant nation.

Earlier this month, the Indian Navy said Mormugao successfully carried out her maiden Brahmos Supersonic cruise missile firing.

In December last year, the Indian Navy commissioned Mormugao – a stealth-guided missile destroyer.

The Indian government said Mormugao is a "formidable combination of stealth, firepower and maneuverability."

"Having over 75% indigenous content, all her major weapons and sensors have been developed and manufactured in India," it said.
