India's prime minister calls for reform at international institutions

WASHINGTON (AA) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that the global order has undergone changes, highlighting the need for reforming international institutions to effectively adapt to them.

"We must revive multilateralism and reform multilateral institutions, with better resources and representation," said Modi in his address to a joint meeting of the US Congress.

"That applies to all our global institutions of governance, especially the United Nations," he said.

Modi, who is on a two-day state visit, earlier met with President Joe Biden.

He was received at the White House with a ceremony that featured the Marine Corps band and thousands of jubilant supporters shouting the Indian leader's name on the South Lawn.

"As we emerge out of the pandemic, we must give shape to a new world order. Consideration, care and concern are the need of the hour," said Modi, adding that "giving a voice to the Global South is the way forward."

He also said that the African Union should be given full membership in the G-20.

"When the world has changed, our institutions too must change, or risk getting replaced by a world of rivalries without rules," he said.

Modi also praised the cooperation between India and the US, citing areas such as defense, space, sea, science, semiconductors, technology, trade and energy.

"The scope of our cooperation is endless, the potential of our synergies is limitless, and the chemistry in our relations is effortless," he added.

- Ukraine war

The prime minister also stressed the need to stop Russia's war in Ukraine, which he said is "causing great pain in the region."

"Since it involves major powers, the consequences are severe," said Modi.

Saying this is not an era of war, Modi continued: "It is one of dialogue and diplomacy.

"And we all must do what we can to stop the bloodshed and human suffering.”

Modi's remarks received applause from the majority of those present, although there were some members of the House of Representatives who boycotted his speech. Additionally, Modi faced criticism within the US due to concerns raised about India's human rights record.
