ANKARA (AA) - A suspended governor in Indonesia has been sentenced for seven years in jail over corruption, local media reported on Tuesday.

According to daily Jakarta Post, the Jakarta Corruption Court gave its verdict late on Monday night convicting Irwandi Yusuf for “accepting bribes and unlawful gifts” while as governor of northwestern Aceh province.

Yusuf, who was suspended in July 2015 over allegations of accepting bribes, has also been barred from participating in politics for three years after his release.

“The judges found Irwandi guilty of accepting bribes from Bener Meriah regent Ahmadi totaling Rp 1.05 billion ($74,084) in exchange for a number of infrastructure projects in the regency. He was also found to have accepted Rp 8.7 billion in gratuities from businessmen during his two terms as governor,” the daily said.

The court has also ordered him to pay a fine of Rp 300 million ($21,000), it added.

Irwandi served as governor of Aceh province twice since 2006. He won his first term in 2006 Aceh regional election as an independent candidate. He was re-elected as governor in early 2017.

The daily said that Irwandi is second Aceh governor to be convicted of corruption after Abdullah Puteh, who was sentenced to 10 years for accepting a bribe in connection to the procurement of an $872,500 MI-2 Rostov helicopter.
