Increasing poverty in Greece refutes government’s ‘success story,’ says main opposition SYRIZA-PS

ANKARA (AA) - Inflation in Greece further accelerated in September and exceeded 12%, Eurostat revealed on Friday.

Similar to other Eurozone member countries and rest of the world, skyrocketing energy prices and a significant increase in food prices contributed most to record inflation in the country, where August inflation clocked in at 11.2%.

The country's main opposition party, SYRIZA-PS said the latest figures confirm the dire reality which majority of Greeks have to endure, according to Left.gr.

In a statement by two senior deputies responsible for the party’s economy and development policies, Alexis Charitsis and Efi Achtsioglou, it was highlighted that Greek inflation is consistently higher than the European average.

While the Greek Statistic Authority (ELSAT) shows that the poorest households spend 80% of their income on rent and food, the government stubbornly refuses to reduce indirect taxes on food and fuel, the statement added.

“In the face of a tsunami of energy and food price increases that is leading to despair for workers, households, and businesses, the government insists on subsidizing profiteering,” it further said.
