Terrorist organization has destroyed hundreds of mosques, killed worshipers in Turkey

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (AA) - Apart from killing civilians, the PYD/PKK terror organization has also targeted places of worship in its decades-long armed campaign against the Turkish state.

The group's latest attack came Wednesday when it targeted a mosque in the border city of Kilis, killing two civilians and injuring six others.

The rocket attack came after Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch in Syria's Afrin region against the PYD/PKK and Daesh terrorist groups on Saturday.

PKK has destroyed hundreds of mosques in eastern and southeastern Anatolia regions, killed worshipers and used mosques as ammunition depots.

On June 26, 1992, 10 people, including two children, worshiping in a mosque in Susa village of Silvan district in southeastern Diyarbakir province were killed.

Also, on July 5, 1993 in Basbaglar village of Kemaliye district in eastern Erzincan province 33 civilians were killed, including worshipers who had just left the mosque.

After parliamentary elections on June 7, 2015 PKK terrorists moved their attacks from rural areas to city centers.


- Ottoman era mosque vandalized

They vandalized 135 mosques in southeastern provinces, including Sirnak's city center and Idil and Silopi districts, Diyarbakir's Sur district, and Mardin's Nusaybin district.

Ottoman era Fatihpasa Mosque, built 1516-1520, was set on fire twice in 2016 by PKK terrorists.

In 2015, the terrorists damaged 11 other historical buildings, including two churches, in Sur district.

In the same year, in Sirnak’s Cizre district, Sheikh Abdurrahman Mosque, which was being used as a base by the terrorists, was set on fire as they fled.

On June 15, 2016, in eastern Mus province, PKK terrorists took people hostage inside a mosque and attacked Kizilagac Gendarmerie Station, opening fire on the station using heavy weapons.

A guard was martyred and three others wounded in the attack.

-Imam killed

On Aug. 23, 1992, Ali Elbahadir, an imam at Fevziye Mosque in Egil district of Diyarbakir, was killed by PKK terrorists on his way to Lice district.

On Nov. 25, 2017, Ramazan Bozdag, 30, was killed by terrorists in Uzunyazi village of Dogubayazit district in Agri.

On Oct. 6-7, 2014, PKK supporters burnt religious books, including Quran, during illegal demonstrations in Syria's Kobani (Ayn al-Arab) region.

In Aug. 7, 2015 in Kornwestheim town of southern German state Baden-Wurttemberg, PKK members attacked Turkish Islamic Union of Cultural and Social Cooperation's (ATIB) Central Mosque.

In June 24, 2016 a group attacked Ayasofya Mosque in southern Netherlands' Dordrecht. The mosque is operated by Netherlands' Turkish Federation.

On Sep. 4, 2016, PKK propaganda was sprayed on the walls and entrance of a Turkish mosque in Montreal, Canada.

Most recently, a group of PYD/PKK sympathizers attacked two mosques in Germany on Jan. 22. In the northwestern town of Minden, they hurled stones and bottles filled with paint at the Green Mosque, which is run by DITIB, a moderate Muslim organization founded by Turkish migrants.

Also, in eastern Leipzig, PKK sympathizers attacked Eyup Sultan Mosque, smashed the windows and spray-painted the names of PKK and YPG, armed wing of the PYD.

PYD/PKK supporters also attacked Geylani Mosque, which is run by the Geylani Foundation, in the Netherlands on Jan. 23. The windows of the mosque were broken and the walls were vandalized with slogans related to the terrorist organization.

On Wednesday, Eyup Sultan Mosque in Germany's western city of Frankfurt was targeted overnight by supporters of the PYD/PKK terror organization who painted on the main gate threats against the Turkish Muslim community. The mosque is also run by DITIB.

In Syria's Afrin, the PYD/PKK terrorists closed down mosques for worshippers in the region. They also blocked summer courses for teaching holy Quran to children.
