No group claimed responsibility for attack

TEHRAN (AA) - Four law enforcement personnel were injured in a powerful sound explosion in southeast Iran’s Zahedan city early on Wednesday, according to local sources.

The incident took place in Zibashahr area of the bustling city shortly after midnight and sent shockwaves across the area.

The explosion targeted a patrol of law enforcement force near a busy intersection, injuring at least four personnel. They were immediately admitted to a local hospital.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. However, sources said it could be the handwork of local militant groups active in the restive province.

The capital of Sistan-Baluchistan province, bordering Pakistan, Zahedan has seen several bombings in recent years, many of them targeting Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).

Most recently, on June 30, two IRGC vehicles were targeted in the city, injuring a commander. Jaish e Adl, a militant group based in the area, had claimed responsibility for the attack.

The biggest of the bombings in Zahedan took place in 2010, when 27 people were killed. Another local militant outfit Jundullah had claimed responsibility for it.
