Iran won’t renegotiate 2015 nuke deal: Deputy FM

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to withdraw from landmark agreement

VIENNA, Austria (AA) - The landmark nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of nations -- signed in mid-2015 -- is not subject to renegotiation, an Iranian official asserted Friday.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency quoted Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as saying that U.S. calls to “review” the deal would have no effect on its implementation.

“It’s impossible for us to hold fresh [nuclear] talks or negotiate any additional protocols,” Araghchi said.

The deal was inked on July 14, 2015 between Tehran and the P5+1, which is comprised of the UN Security Council’s five permanent members plus Germany.

The agreement allows Iran to pursue a nuclear energy program -- for strictly civilian use -- in return for the lifting of longstanding economic sanctions.

U.S. President Donald Trump, however, has repeatedly threatened to withdraw from the deal over the objections of EU member states.
