ANBAR, Iraq (AA) - At least seven Iraqi border guards were killed and 17 others injured in a Daesh attack in the western Anbar province on Tuesday, according to an army officer.

Daesh militants attacked a headquarters of Iraqi border guards on the road linking the Ratba city to the border Trebil crossing with Jordan, Col. Walid al-Duleimi told Anadolu Agency.

“Seven border guards were killed and 17 injured in ensuing clashes with Daesh militants,” he said.

According to al-Duleimi, a number of Daesh militants were killed in the attack.

Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since mid-2014, when Daesh captured Mosul along with vast swathes of territory in the country’s northern and western regions.

While the Iraqi army, backed by its allies on the ground and U.S.-led airstrikes, has since managed to retake much lost territory, Daesh remains in firm control of several parts of the country, including Mosul.
