JERUSALEM (AA) - Isaac Herzog, a former Labor Party leader, was sworn in as Israel's 11th president on Wednesday.
The country's former President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett as well as deputies and other guests attended the oath-taking ceremony at the Knesset – Israel’s parliament.
On June 2, Herzog got 87 votes in the 120-member legislature, while his rival Miriam Peretz, an educator and social activist, won only 27 votes.
Herzog, the former head of the Jewish Agency for Israel, a nonprofit, is the son of Chaim Herzog, who served as Israel's sixth president between 1983 and 1993. The 60-year-old served as the leader of Labor Party from 2013 until 2017.
Israel's president, who is elected for a single seven-year term, has a largely ceremonial role as compared to the prime minister.
