Israel denies Daesh link to Jerusalem attacks

Israeli army says attacks were carried out by a local cell

JERUSALEM (AA) – The Israeli army on Saturday denied any Daesh link to Friday's attacks in East Jerusalem where three Palestinians and an Israeli policewoman were killed.

The three were shot dead after carrying out two separate shooting and stabbing attacks, which resulted in the death of the Israeli policewoman.

"According to our estimate, the attack was done by a local cell," the military said in a statement.

"There are no indications that the act was directed or influenced by a particular organization," it added.

Daesh terrorist group had claimed responsibility for the attacks before Palestinian groups Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) confirmed in separate statements that the three Palestinians were group activists and had no connection with Daesh.

The attackers were from the village of Deir Abu Meshaal, to the south of the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Following the attacks, the Israeli government took a number of punitive measures against Palestinian residents in the West Bank.

According to Israeli police, the Israeli government has revoked permits allowing Palestinians to visit Israel on occasion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Since October 2015, more than 285 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces during -- or immediately after -- alleged attacks on Israelis or in clashes with Israeli security forces, according to Palestinian figures.

Israeli authorities, meanwhile, say almost 50 Israelis have been killed in attacks carried out by Palestinians over the same period.
