Israel refuses to release Palestinian on hunger strike

Palestinian Prisoners Society terms Israeli court decision 'an execution order' against al-Akhras

By Qais Abu Samra

RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) - An Israeli court in occupied Jerusalem on Thursday refused to release a Palestinian detainee who is on hunger strike for the 95th consecutive day.

"The Israeli Supreme Court refused to release Palestinian detainee Maher al-Akhras who is on hunger strike despite his deteriorating health condition," said the Palestinian Prisoners Society in a statement.

The statement termed the Israeli court decision "an execution order" against al-Akhras.

On Wednesday, the lawyer of al-Akhras appealed for his release or transferring him to a Palestinian hospital.

The Israeli court on Sunday froze his administrative detention order, however, it refused to release him.

In a vigil held on Tuesday, scores of Palestinian activists decried the Israeli measures against al-Akhras.

Maher al-Akhras was detained on July 27 by the Israeli authorities and was held under the administrative detention with no trial or charge against him, which pushed him to go on hunger strike in protest against his detention.

According to figures compiled by a Palestinian rights body, about 4,400 Palestinian political detainees are languishing in Israeli jails -- including 39 women and 155 children – while 350 of them are under administrative detention.
