Israel to try Palestinian teen behind closed doors

The court postponed al-Tamimi's trial until March 11

RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) – An Israeli military judge on Tuesday ordered a closed-door hearing for 16-year-old Palestinian teen Ahed al-Tamimi, according to local media.

Al-Tamimi appeared before the Ofer military court, west of the West Bank city of Ramallah, on charges of attacking security forces.

The defiant teen – in handcuffs and shackles -- has flashed the victory sign as she entered the court room, according to her father Basem al-Tamimi.

“The court decided to postpone Ahed’s trial until March 11,” Basem told Anadolu Agency.

According to Yediot Aharonot daily, the judge overseeing al-Tamimi’s trial has ordered all proceedings to be held behind closed doors.

The judge argued that the closed-door trial was meant “for the protection of the minor”, the newspaper said.

Israeli forces first detained al-Tamimi on Dec. 19 during an overnight raid carried out in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh for allegedly attacking Israeli soldiers.

In 2012, Istanbul’s Basaksehir Municipality granted al-Tamimi the prestigious Hanzala Courage Award for defying Israeli soldiers who had just arrested her brother.

According to Palestinian figures, over 6,400 Palestinians are being held in Israeli prisons, including 300 children.
