Israeli army officials arrive in Cairo to discuss border incident

JERUSALEM (AA) - The Israeli army said on Sunday that three of its senior generals have arrived in Cairo to meet their Egyptian counterparts to discuss a border incident last week.

On June 3, an Egyptian border police officer crossed into Israel and killed three Israeli soldiers.

The three generals, including the chief of the army's Southern Command, the army's chief of the international cooperation unit, and the head of military intelligence operations, met with the Egyptian military officials to continue their investigation into the incident.

"Both sides expressed their commitment to an in-depth investigation and reaching the truth," the Israeli army said in a statement.

The Egyptian army’s narrative was that the Egyptian border officer was chasing drug smugglers and an exchange of fire occurred with the three Israeli soldiers killed in the incident.

But the Israeli narrative was that an officer-turned-terrorist infiltrated the border and killed two Israeli soldiers at a guard post and then a third soldier was killed in an exchange of fire with the attacker, who was also killed.

Media reports identified the attacker as Mohamed Salah, 22, whose body was seized by Israel but later handed over to Egyptian authorities.
