Israeli forces kill 1 in skirmish in occupied Golan
At least one person is killed when Israeli troops storm occupied Golan’s Al-Shahhar refugee camp
QUNEITRA, Syria (AA) - One person was killed and five others injured by Israeli forces in the occupied Golan Heights, according to local sources.
Late Wednesday, about a dozen Israeli soldiers stormed Golan’s Al-Shahhar refugee camp, local sources said.
An unidentified armed individual opened fire on the soldiers, who responded by shooting him dead, the sources added.
They also said that at least five civilians had been injured -- including women and children -- when the soldiers indiscriminately opened fire while withdrawing from the area.
UN peacekeeping forces were reportedly deployed to the camp in the immediate wake of the skirmish.
Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee appeared to confirm the incident, saying: "In the early hours of last night, the IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] came under fire in an isolated area near the border fence with Syria.”
Israeli forces retaliated, he added, without sustaining any casualties.
The Al-Shahhar refugee camp is located on the northern outskirts of Golan’s city of Quneitra.
The camp currently hosts hundreds of Syrian refugees who fled their homes after the eruption of the Syria conflict in 2011.
