Israeli guard injured in Jerusalem stabbing attack

Israeli police say the attacker was 24-year-old Palestinian

JERUSALEM (AA) – An Israeli security guard was seriously injured in a stabbing attack in West Jerusalem on Sunday, according to Israeli police.

An assailant approached the guard and stabbed him near the central bus station in West Jerusalem before running away, according to Israeli media.

A police spokesperson said that the attacker was a 24-year-old Palestinian man, who was detained by police.

Israeli daily Maariv said the attacker was from the West Bank city of Nablus and held an Israeli work permit.

There was no Palestinian reaction on the attack at the time of publishing the report.

The attack comes amid tension across the Palestinian territories since U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Jerusalem remains at the heart of the Israel-Palestine conflict, with Palestinians hoping that East Jerusalem -- now occupied by Israel -- might eventually serve as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
