Istanbul airport terror attack death toll rises to 43

Interior Minister Efkan Ala says 43 people - including 19 foreigners - have been killed in the terrorist attack at Istanbul Ataturk Airport Tuesday night

ANKARA (AA) – The death toll in Tuesday’s terror attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport has risen to 43, Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala said on Thursday.

Speaking during a news conference in Ankara, Ala said 19 foreigners are among the 43 killed in the terrorist attack, which also injured more than 200 people.

"There are now 94 injured people in hospitals," Ala said.

Death toll does not include three suicide bombers, of which one has been identified, Ala said.

His comments came on the same day as a total number of 13 suspects - including 9 Turkish citizens - were detained in a series of raids in Istanbul on Thursday.

Three suicide bombers fired indiscriminately before blowing themselves up at Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport on Tuesday night.

Turkey's Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said initial indications suggested Daesh was responsible for the attack.

Yildirim said that airport operations resumed Wednesday morning.

The Turkish Prime Ministry on Wednesday announced a one-day national mourning in the aftermath of the Istanbul airport attack.

Turkey hoisted its flags at half-mast across the country and in Turkish foreign representatives around the world, the prime ministry said in the statement.
