ISTANBUL (AA) – A number of landmarks in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, were illuminated in blue and orange Monday to mark World Cancer Day.

They included the July 15 Martyrs' Bridge, Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and Galata Tower.

World Cancer Day, observed annually on Feb. 4, aims to raise awareness about the deadly disease and encourage its prevention, detection and treatment.

On Feb. 4 every year, the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) along with other organizations launch campaigns to increase public awareness about cancer and provide information on ways of reducing the risk of developing it.

The lighting up of landmarks in Istanbul was also in support of UICC’s cause.

According to the cancer.org website, the estimated number of deaths worldwide from cancer in 2018 was 9.5 million or 26,000 deaths a day.
