ANKARA (AA) - Over 20 academics and security experts will gather in Istanbul for an international conference to discuss the civil-military relations in Muslim societies.

The three-day conference, hosted by Center for Islam and Global Affairs (CIGA) from Sunday, will bring together scholars from Turkey, Pakistan, Sudan, Egypt, Algeria, Indonesia, Sudan, U.S. and other countries.

The conference is being held under the theme the Quest for Democracy: Examining Civil-Military Relations in Muslims Societies.

Prof Sami A. Al-Arian, director CIGA, told Anadolu Agency that one of the main obstacles for the political progress and economic development of many Muslim societies such as Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Algeria, Sudan and Indonesia has been the civil-military relations.

“This conference will examine this turbulent relationship that has hindered the democratization process and rule of law in these societies,” Al-Arian said.

He added that the conference will look into several cases of successful transitioning to democracy in different countries -- including Spain, Portugal, Indonesia, and other countries in Latin America.
