ROME - Italian police detained 13 far-right activists in the northern city of Verona, suspected of attacking Moroccan fans celebrating a historic World Cup win against Spain late Tuesday, media reports said Thursday.
The Moroccan supporters were attacked by a group of men dressed in black with their faces covered up, police said in a statement.
The suspects "were identified by investigators as militants of far-right groups in the city," it added.
The detainees were accused of hitting the Moroccan fans’ cars with chains and sticks, causing damages and injuries. A woman was wounded by shards of broken windows during the assault.
Those who were detained have been charged with damaging property and causing injuries after the assault on the vehicles, which were driving around the center of the Venetian city after Morocco qualified for the World Cup quarterfinals.
