Italy, Poland call for 'real security guarantees' for Ukraine

Italian Prime Minister Meloni says it is 'fundamental condition to obtain fair, long-lasting peace'

By Giovanni Legorano

ROME (AA) – Ukraine must be given “real security guarantees,” Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Wednesday after a meeting with the Polish premier in Warsaw.

“We are in perfect agreement with Poland over the need for real security guarantees for Ukraine, also because offering real security guarantees to Ukraine is the fundamental condition to obtain a fair and long-lasting peace,” Meloni said.

Her remarks came ahead of a NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania on July 11-12 where Ukraine hopes the alliance will declare that the country would join the alliance soon after the end of the war and how this goal will be achieved.

However, other NATO members have been cautious about such a move, fearing it could bring the alliance closer to a direct war with Russia.

Meloni, who has been a fierce supporter of Ukraine since the start of the war in February 2022, said Italy will go on standing by Ukraine for as long as necessary.

“We support the defense of freedom of a people (Ukrainians), which is stunning the world (fighting) against an aggression we cannot accept,” Meloni said.
