Jewish settlers converge on W. Bank archaeological site

Settlers believe archaeological site contains ancient temple mentioned in Torah

By Qais Abu Samra

NABLUS, Palestine (AA) – Dozens of Israeli settlers on Wednesday converged on an archaeological site in the occupied West Bank town of Sebastia to mark the third day of the weeklong Jewish holiday of Sukkot, according to a local official.

“Dozens of Jewish settlers backed by Israeli troops stormed the site, where they performed Jewish religious rituals,” Sebastia Governor Mohamed Azim told Anadolu Agency.

The settlers believe that the archaeological site contains an ancient temple mentioned in the Torah.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism, the site -- which dates back to the Bronze Age (circa 3,200 BC) -- was occupied by the Assyrians, Persians and Romans.

In the Byzantine era, Sebastia became a religious center due to the belief that the tomb of John the Baptist (the prophet Yahya ben Zakaria) existed there.

Roughly 600,000 Israelis currently live in more than 100 Jewish-only settlements built throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem since Israel occupied the territories in 1967.

International law views the West Bank and East Jerusalem as “occupied territories” and considers all Jewish settlement-building activity there as illegal.
