Jordan king meets with Turkish FM in Amman

Jerusalem, Syria top agenda of talks between King Abdullah, Mevlut Cavusoglu

By Zuhal Demirci

AMMAN (AA) - Jordanian King Abdullah II on Monday met with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, the latter of whom is on an official visit to the Hashemite Kingdom.

During talks in Amman, the two men stressed the importance of bilateral cooperation, especially on the sensitive issue of Jerusalem.

Earlier Monday, Cavusoglu met with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, who, at a joint press conference held after their meeting, hailed Jordan’s close ties with Turkey.

“Our relations continue to progress steadily,” Safadi said.

He went on to note that his talks with Cavusoglu had covered a host of regional issues, including the Palestinian national cause and the conflict in Syria.

According to the Jordanian foreign minister, Amman and Ankara share identical views on Jerusalem, with both rejecting a recent U.S. decision to recognize the city as Israel’s capital.

“We also discussed the challenges facing the development of bilateral economic relations,” Safadi said.

Jordan’s top diplomat went on to underline the importance of finding a political solution to the conflict in Syria.

“We will maintain our cooperation with a view to finding a political solution to the crisis," Safadi said.

Commenting on Turkey’s ongoing Operation Olive Branch in northern Syria, Safadi said: "We hope the operation will ultimately serve to bolster Turkey’s security."
