JERUSALEM (AA) – The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned on Monday the Israeli ambassador in Amman over a shooting in Jerusalem in which a Jordanian citizen was killed on Friday.

Israeli radio reported acting Jordanian Foreign Minister Mohammad al-Momani asked Israel's ambassador to provide detailed information about the shooting.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement there were “intensive contacts between Israel and Jordan about this incident”.

"Summoning the Israeli ambassador on Monday falls within the framework of these contacts,” it added.

On Friday, a Jordanian man was shot dead after he allegedly attacked an Israeli police officer with a knife in occupied East Jerusalem, according to a statement released by Israeli police the same day.

"An assailant armed with a knife tried to stab an Israeli police officer at the Damascus Gate [outside Jerusalem’s Old City]," the statement read.

"Police at the scene shot the assailant, resulting in his death," it added.

Police identified the alleged attacker as a 28-year-old Jordanian national.
