Jordan: Two-state solution needed for peace in Mid East

Jordanian king stresses need for just, lasting peace for independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as capital

By Laith al-Junaidi

AMMAN (AA) - Jordan’s king on Wednesday affirmed the necessity of a "just and lasting peace" in Palestine within the two-state solution in order to achieve peace in the region.

Abdullah II's remarks came while receiving U.S. President Donald Trump's advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner, in Amman.

King Abdullah and Kushner discussed efforts to "solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", the Jordanian royal court said in a statement.

During the meeting, King Abdullah stressed that east Jerusalem must be the capital of a future Palestinian state "living in peace and security alongside Israel."

The statement added that Kushner was visiting Jordan on a regional tour including four other Arab countries and Israel.

Kushner is expected to visit Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates as part of the tour.

Kushner is accompanied by his deputy, Avi Berkowitz, U.S. Envoy to the Middle East Jason Greenblatt and U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook.

Washington has yet to officially announce the timetable for Kushner's tour.

Based on leaks to the media, the "Deal of the Century" will call on the Palestinians to make major concessions to Israel regarding Jerusalem’s status and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes in historical Palestine.
