ANKARA (AA) - July 6 was marked as the "hottest day on record" with a global average temperature of 17.23 C (63 F), surpassing the previous high of 17.18 C (62.9 F) on July 4 and 5.

According to the data shared by the University of Maine in the US, global temperatures broke records three times in a row in the same week.

The average air temperature in Antarctica for the week was measured to be 4.5 C (40.1 F) higher than the normal average.

Meanwhile, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it lacks the ability to verify the climate analysis data collected by the University of Maine through computer simulation.

However, it said that the world is going through a hot period due to climate change.

Previously, the highest average temperature was measured as 16.9 C (62.4 F) in 2016, the US official weather service data shows.
