The Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency said the UAE deported Nisar Ahmed Tantray to India where he was arrested by the country’s top anti-terror body, the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

PTI said UAE deported Nisar in connection with an alleged 2017 attack on an India paramilitary CRPF camp in southern Kashmir.

He shifted to the Arab country recently. He was arrested March 31, Firstpost online news site reported.

“Nisar, a resident of Tral, fled to the UAE on a work visa after on February 1,” the report added.

The Indian news agency said Nisar appeared in a Delhi court Wednesday which remanded him to NIA custody.

An elder brother of Nisar, Noor Trali, was killed in 2017 during a gunfight with Indian forces. He was a member of banned Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militant outfit in disputed Jammu and Kashmir. The brothers belong to the restive Tral town in Pulwama district in south Kashmir.

The report said JeM sent two suicide attackers to the CRPF camp.

- Disputed region

Jammu and Kashmir, a Muslim-majority Himalayan region, is held by India and Pakistan in parts and claimed by both in full. A small sliver of Kashmir is also held by China.

Since they were partitioned in 1947, the India and Pakistan have fought three wars -- in 1948, 1965 and 1971 -- two of them over Kashmir.

Also, in Siachen glacier in northern Kashmir, Indian and Pakistani troops have fought intermittently since 1984. A cease-fire came into effect in 2003.

Some Kashmiri groups in Jammu and Kashmir have been fighting against Indian rule for independence, or for unification with neighboring Pakistan.

According to several human rights organizations, thousands of people have reportedly been killed in the conflict in the region since 1989.
