NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) - Two teachers were killed on early Wednesday as suspected al-Shabaab militants attacked a secondary school in Kenya’s northeastern county of Mandera, statements said.
"Over 20 assailants believed to be Al-Shabaab militants raided teachers’ quarters in Arabia Boys Secondary School, Mandera County, about 2 kilometers away from the Kenya-Somalia border,” the country’s Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Olaka Kutswa, the county commissioner, said: “The attackers hurled an Improvised Explosive Device into one of the two blocks housing non-local teachers, consequently killing two of them.”
Separately, the police said in a statement that the attackers managed to flee.
“All other teachers and students are safe and no other part of the school was affected. The hunt for the attackers is ongoing,” the statement added.
In 2014, 28 teachers were killed after a bus they were travelling on in Mandera county was hijacked by al-Shabaab militants.
