Kenya: Anti-corruption chief resigns amid graft charges

The shortest-serving chair of the anti-corruption body in the E.African nation steps down

By Andrew Wasike

Nairobi (AA) - Kenya’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) head Philip Kinisu on Wednesday bowed to pressure and resigned amid corruption allegations.

This comes just a day after members of Parliament filed a petition to have President Uhuru Kenyatta form a tribunal towards his removal from office.

In a statement to the press, Kinisu charged that the local media was reporting falsely on issues concerning him and his family business.

“I have today tendered to his Excellency the President my resignation as Chairman of EACC. By this measure, I believe that EACC will henceforth be able to focus on carrying out its mandate,” said the statement.

Kinisu maintained that he was innocent of all charges directed against him and his family, including 2008 charges linked to National Youth Fund (NYS) contracts.

With his resignation, Kinisu became the shortest-serving chairman of the anti-corruption body in the East African country’s history.
