Kenya defies court orders, deports lawyer again

Miguna Miguna was sedated and handcuffed before being bundled into the Dubai-bound plane

By Andrew Wasike NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) – The Kenyan government has again, in an act of the defiance of court orders deported fiery opposition lawyer Miguna Miguna despite a court ruling that his first deportation was illegal and he should be allowed in the country. Confirming the deportation, Miguna’s lawyer Otiende Omollo said in a statement, "So they have assaulted Lawyers, defied the Court & deported Dr. Miguna... on EK 722! I feel helpless and angry as an Advocate! Useless as an MP & Angry as a Kenyan!!!”. Also confirming the deportation of Miguna who is also a Canadian citizen was vocal Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria who boarded the flight saying, "Aboard Flight EK 722 to Dubai. I can positively confirm we have all nationalities on this flight including a very bald headed Canadian.”
Local media and credible sources close to Miguna who spoke to Anadolu Agency said the lawyer was sedated and handcuffed before being put on the Dubai-bound plane. “Which country would allow someone entry on a document other than what they used to board the plane?” This happened hours after a Kenyan court summoned Kenya’s Interior Minister Fred Matiang’I, Immigration boss Gordon Kihalangwa and the Inspector General of police Joseph Boinett over failure to produce Miguna in court on Tuesday as directed. The three have been convicted of contempt of court by Judge George Odunga. In February, the self-proclaimed general of the opposition National Resistance Movement (NRM), Miguna was deported to Canada after being arrested for attending the mock inauguration of Odinga. Kenya held two successive and tense presidential elections last year, which resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people, according to human rights organizations. Odinga recently shook hands with Kenyan President Uluru Kenyatta and called for a truce, a move Miguna has termed a "betrayal for the people of Kenya".
