Landmark Picasso exhibition set to open in London

LONDON (AA) - The U.K.’s National Portrait Gallery is set to unveil a major exhibition containing dozens of portraits by the acclaimed Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso.

The London exhibition, which opens on Thursday, will include more than 75 portraits made by the Spanish artist throughout his career.

The works include a group of self-portraits as well as caricatures and portraits of some of Picasso’s friends, intimate partners and children.

Picasso is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and is credited with co-founding the abstract art movement known as Cubism.

National Portrait Gallery Director Nicholas Cullinan said: “We are delighted to stage Picasso Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, a collaboration with Museu Picasso, Barcelona, which focuses on the artist’s reinvention of time-honored conventions of portraiture, and his genius for caricature.

“The exhibition gathers together major loans from public and private collections that demonstrate the breadth of Picasso’s oeuvre and the extraordinary range of styles he employed across all media and from all periods of his career.”

The exhibition will run until Feb. 5, 2017.
