Landmine explosions in Yemen kill 9 civilians

2 children, woman among victims

SANAA, Yemen (AA) – Nine civilians were killed in landmine explosions in war-torn Yemen over the last three days, a local NGO said on Monday.

In a statement, Yemeni Landmine Records said a woman and two children were among the victims.

Eight other civilians were injured by the explosions, which took place in al-Hudaydah and al-Bayda provinces.

The NGO called on the UN envoy and human rights groups to increase pressure on Houthi rebels “to stop planting landmines.”

There was no comment from the Houthi group on the report.

On Sunday, the UN Mission to Support the Hudaydah Agreement voiced concern over the rising civilian deaths from mine explosions in the coastal province.

Yemen has been engulfed by violence and instability since 2014, when Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels captured much of the country, including the capital Sanaa. A Saudi-led coalition entered the war in early 2015 to restore the Yemeni government to power.

The eight-year conflict has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with millions suffering from hunger.
