Landslide in southeast Myanmar kills 20: Report

Hundreds of people went missing after landslide caused by heavy monsoon rains in Mon state, local media report

YANGON, Myanmar (AA) - At least 20 people have been killed and about 100 others went missing in a landslide caused by heavy monsoon rains in southeastern Myanmar, local media reported on Friday.

According to state-run MRTV, the landslide buried homes and vehicles in a nearby village in Thaton township of Mon state.

"Authorities and rescue workers are still working to rescue those trapped in the houses and vehicles as of Friday evening," it said, citing local authorities.

It added that 20 dead bodies were recovered, while dozens others have been rescued and transported to hospital in Thaton town.

According to government data, the flood forced more than 12,000 people in Mon state and adjacent Kayin state to take shelter in temporary camps over the past two days.

In recent weeks, heavy rain have caused flood in upper part of the country forcing around 89,000 people to take refuge in temporary camps and religious buildings.
