Late header brings victory for Uruguay against Egypt

ANKARA (AA) - Uruguay beat Egypt 1-0 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Group A match on Friday following a winning header by South American team defender Jose Gimenez late into the game.

This match was held in Ekaterinburg.

Uruguay and Egypt were unable to break the deadlock until the late minutes of the match.

In the 88th minute Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani's free-kick hit the goalpost.

Just a minute later Uruguay central defender Gimenez's header beat Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy as South American heavyweights scored the winning goal of the match in the nick of time.

Atletico Madrid regular Gimenez's goal sealed victory for Uruguay.

Egypt were unable to equalize in the rest of the time so Uruguay won this match 1-0.

Meanwhile, Egypt star Mohamed Salah did not play against Uruguay. He was among the substitutes because of his injury.

In this year's UEFA Champions League final Salah got injured after Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos' tackle.

After first matches in Group A, Russia are leading this group as the World Cup hosts hammered Saudi Arabia 5-0 on Thursday.

Uruguay are in the second spot after Friday's victory against Egypt.

Egypt are now in third place and Saudi Arabia are coming last.
