Lebanon Parliament to convene to elect new president on Sept. 29

President Michel Aoun’s six-year term ends on October 31

By Wassim Seif El Din
BEIRUT, Lebanon (AA) – Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said Tuesday the assembly will convene on Sept. 29 to elect a new president.

In a statement, Berri’s office said the session will be held at 11:00 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) to elect a new president.

President Michel Aoun’s six-year term ends on October 31.

The votes of two-thirds of lawmakers in the 128-member assembly are required for a candidate to be successful in the first round of voting, after which a simple majority suffices.

The president in Lebanon is limited to only one six-year term.

Lebanese MPs have not yet agreed on a successor to Aoun, raising concerns of a political and institutional deadlock in Lebanon, which has been going through a deep economic crisis since 2019.

Lebanon has already been without a fully functioning government since May.
