Lebanon responds to US proposal on Israel maritime border demarcation

No details provided on Lebanon’s response

By Wassim Seif El Din
BEIRUT, Lebanon (AA) – Lebanon said Tuesday it had responded to a US proposal on a maritime border demarcation with Israel.

This came during a meeting between Lebanese President Michel Aoun and US mediator Amos Hochstein in the capital Beirut, according to a statement released by Aoun’s office.

The statement, however, did not provide any details about the Lebanese response to the US proposal.

The statement said that the Lebanese president reiterated his country’s sovereign rights to water and natural resources.

Hochstein, for his part, said he will pass the Lebanese response to the Israeli side as part of his mediation task.

An informed source told Anadolu Agency on Monday that the Lebanese response will include a proposal to maintain Lebanon's complete right in the disputed Qana gas field.

Lebanon and Israel are engaged in a dispute over a maritime area that is 860 square kilometers (332 square miles), according to maps sent by both counties to the UN in 2011.

The area is rich in natural gas and oil. Five sessions of indirect negotiations were held between Lebanon and Israel under UN sponsorship and US mediation. The last round of talks was in May 2021 but it was stuck because of major differences.
