London's Trafalgar Square evacuated over suspicious package

LONDON (AA) - London's main Trafalgar Square was evacuated by police after a suspicious package raised alarm on Saturday.

The police cordoned off the whole square before a controlled explosion of the package, according to local reports.

"Officers are currently at #TrafalgarSquare where they have evacuated the scene. Please do not travel to the area," the City of Westminster Police tweeted.

In a later tweet, the force said they remain on the scene and the incident "has now been concluded and the square will reopen in due course."

The closure came on a day when thousands of people are expected to go to central London on day three of Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
