Madrid court suspends Bayern Munich defender Hernandez's prison term

French footballer to pay fine of €96,000 ($111,000) instead

ANKARA (AA) - Bayern Munich defender Lucas Hernandez's six-month prison term was suspended by a Madrid court on Wednesday.

The provincial court said his sentence will remain suspended for the next four years, and will not face imprisonment if he does not commit another crime during this period. He will also pay a fine of €96,000 ($111,000).

The French player was arrested in February 2017 on a charge of an altercation with his partner Amelia Lorente. Both were sentenced to 31 days of community service, and a restraining order was imposed for six months, preventing them from being within 500 meters of one another.

But the couple, who later married, were caught together in Spain, and thus Hernandez was sentenced for violating the restraining order in December 2019.

Having moved to Bayern Munich from Atletico Madrid in 2019, Hernandez helped the German club lift the UEFA Champions League title in 2020.

He also won the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2021 UEFA Nations League with France.
