Main opposition leader: Turkey entering inflationary spiral

Turkey must establish a just, well-functioning, and people-friendly government, says Kemal Kilicdaroglu

By Emin Avundukluoglu

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's main opposition leader on Tuesday claimed that the country has entered a period of ever-rising inflation.

"Turkey has entered an inflationary spiral. Every summer, normally prices drop, (because) new products come to market," Kemal Kilicdaroglu told his Republican People's Party's (CHP) parliamentary group.

But instead, this summer, he added: “All the prices have gone up.”

Kilicdaroglu's remarks came after the country's statistical authority on Monday announced a 17.53% annual hike in consumer prices in June.

Annual inflation rose 0.94 percentage points last month, up from 16.59% in May, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).

More difficult days await Turkey this fall and winter, Kilicdaroglu warned.

"Together we have to establish a just, well-functioning, people-friendly government," he added.
